Bodhrán -- a hand-held frame drum from Ireland.  The spelling is Gaelic, so the "dh" is pronounced as "w."  The word is pronounced bau'-rawn, with the first syllable rhyming with "cow," the second syllable rhyming with "lawn," and emphasis on the first syllable.  While frame drums seem to come from all over the world, there are a couple of special things about the playing of the bodhran.  The first is the use of the stick, or "tipper."  While using a drumstick to hit a drum head is nothing unusual, in bodhran playing, both ends of the stick are used to hit the drum.  The second unusual feature of bodhran playing is that the hand that holds the drum is also applied to the back of the drumhead to change the pitch, loudness, and length of ringing.
